AN EYE FOR ROCKS

A cameo view of one mans love for the indigenous and randomly found rocks in rural Pennsylvania. Steve Snyder supports himself by restoring stone structures and constructing new ones using traditional materials and proportions that are native to Bucks County. The film focuses on building a traditional forge, one stone at a time, and also reveals the passionate occupation of creating stone sculpture in a remarkable outdoor studio. A personal look inside the mind of a contemporary man working with the ancient tools of hands and eyes.

DIRECTORS BIO:

.Director, BERT SHAPIRO

BERT SHAPIRO During a long career as a publisher of educational materials, I became interested in documentary video making. In 1995 I decided on a career change. Finally in 1997 I began to work full-time at acquiring the technical skills necessary for effective camera work and non-linear editing. In this absorbing process during these years I have found the work exciting, sometimes frustrating, never boring.

Whilst admiring the production skills in managing a large-scale film, and in spite of the obvious limitations, I have taken pleasure in working alone.

Hand Rolled on 29th Street was the first documentary in the series Eye and Hand. The series is focused on capturing skills that may soon disappear in the hi-tech production factories of the 21st Century. It has been gratifying to have received the following acknowledgments and screenings of Hand Rolled on 29th Street: Zoie International Festival 2000, 3rd prize in documentary section.

New Haven Film Festival 2000, 1st in Audience Choice Award for documentary work.

Philadelphia International Festival 2000, screening at Festival. Rochester NY Film Festival 2000-Movies on a Shoestring Trophy Award. Hot Springs International Documentary Festival 2000. Rutgers Film Festival 2001 Honorable Mention, Channel 13 Metro Arts New York City TV, NYExpo Film Festival Jury Award.
